EXCLUSIVE: "I give a 100% guarantee that the film will be a stress buster"- Director Ashish Kumar Dubey on his film Guddu Ki Dulhan

Talking to Bollywood Hungama about the film Guddu Ki Dulhan, Ashish Dubey said, “This is a family drama based in Banaras. It is a very funny film. It is about a man who is crazy for a bride and in that process, a lot happens and the entire city's name comes up everywhere. So, it is a family drama film in the comic zone.”

On asking why he chose to do this film, he said, “The story and the genre that we are dealing with is very good to send across a message. So we decided to create it in a fun zone and worked on it accordingly. This film comes with a message but will make you laugh and will also teach you a little something.”

The makers are yet to reveal the cast of the film but promise that it will be big. “We have kept it a secret for now. We have a prominent casting but cannot reveal it right now. The cast reveal will be done soon,” he added.

The film will go on floors on June 15 in Banaras and will be shot in a single schedule as the story is set in the city of Banaras. Owing to the pandemic, the way films are shot has also changed. “Things have changed now in every manner. Now, if we are going to shoot we have to follow all guidelines regarding corona set by the government. We are making sure that there is proper sanitization, PPE kits, and masks available on the sets of the film. That said, people need work at the moment to run their families. The film industry has been the most affected. If we start something, it will be good for all. But we will be following all precautions and ensure the safety of the team," Ashish said.

Ashish who has also penned the film said that he draws inspiration from his surroundings for all his stories. “The thing is we observe people and write stories. Whenever we pick a story or content we pick it from our surroundings. So sometimes people like it, sometimes they don't, but our efforts are the same whether good or bad. If someone says something bad about the film, it makes us feel bad. But on the other hand, if someone appreciates us it brings immense happiness. Basically, we plan to bring on-screen something that inspires people whether it makes you laugh or gives a message. It should touch the hearts of people,” Ashish said, highlighting the kind of stories he believes in.

Producer Anjum Rizvi is also all praise for Ashish and his innumerable story ideas. “I don’t know from where Ashish comes up with so many ideas because every story he comes up with is worth making into a film. He has multiple story ideas at any given point in time. So much that we have to stop him at times and tell him to first finish one and then talk about the rest. He keeps travelling across the country and every time he comes back from his travels he has an amazing story with him. Whenever he brings a story, the first question I ask him is, 'Where did you get this story from?’. He is a rooted guy and the thought behind his stories is something that anyone can identify with. It’s more of emotions than the location or the geography of the story. He is very talented on that front. He started his career with south Indian directors, so he has knowledge of the basic craft also.”

While Ashish thrives on originality and draws inspiration from real-life situations, in the recent past we have seen a trend of remakes of films in the Hindi language. However, Ashish feels that remakes do not reflect a lack of originality. “There is no dearth of originality. We have so much different content. We don't need remakes, but we feel that a good film made in another language should reach a different audience, whether south or foreign, we want that people in the rest of India should watch it. That is why we make remakes and not because of a lack of original stories. It is because we want to present some good content in front of people."

Meanwhile, Guddu Ki Dulhan will soon go on floors and the makers plan on wrapping up the shoot in 40-50 days depending on the pandemic situation. Ashish is confident that their film Guddu ki Dulhan will be a big stress buster for people. "There is so much stress, with the pandemic. First of all, I pray to God that the pandemic ends soon and people get to watch this film. I guarantee that the film will be a stress buster. The film will be enjoyed, loved, and relatable to people. We give a 100% guarantee that people's stress level will be reduced post watching this film," Ashish concludes.
