BREAKING: CBFC censors ‘Rajasthan’, ‘M***r C**d’, middle finger visuals in Ram Charan-Janhavi Kapoor starrer Peddi

The much-awaited film Peddi is all set to release on June 4 and its makers have completed the censor process way in advance. In this story, Bollywood Hungama will feature on the cuts given to the Pan-India entertainer’s original Telugu version.

Peddi was passed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with a U/A 16+ certificate. However, the makers were asked to make several changes. Words like ‘Loudesh’, ‘Bokka’, ‘Lambdi kodaka’, ‘M***r C**d’, ‘Dongamunda kodaka’ and ‘Kalchi padi denguta’ were asked to be muted or modified. The words ‘Saruku saman’ in the ‘Chikiri Chikiri’ song were asked to be modified. In the second half, the word ‘Rajasthan’ and a reference to a community were asked to be deleted.

Thankfully, no visual cut was imposed on the film. In other words, the action and violent scenes remain intact. The only modification requested was to cover the shot of the middle finger with CG visuals.

Once these changes were made, the makers of Peddi were handed over the censor certificate on May 22. The length of the film, as mentioned on the censor certificate, is 189.00 minutes. In other words, Peddi is 3 hours and 9 minutes long.

Peddi stars Ram Charan, Janhvi Kapoor, Shiva Rajkumar, Jagapathi Babu, Divyenndu, Boman Irani and others. It is written and directed by Buchi Babu Sana, produced by Venkata Satish Kilaru and co-produced by Ishan Saksena. Oscar-winning A R Rahman has composed the songs. Jio Studios will handle the North India distribution. It’ll also release in the IMAX format.

At the trailer launch, Ram Charan said, “Last 25-30 days, we were doing kushti and pehelwan shoots. And I asked our director Buchi Babu Sana to get trained artists, but he got real pehelwans. While shooting, I got a cartilage tear, but that’s fine. It’s worth it, and it’s a beautiful memory of Peddi.”

EXCLUSIVE: Vashu Bhagnani vs Tips-Dhawans row gets UGLIER; a source hits back, "Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai has NOTHING to do with Biwi No. 1; Dhawans paid Rs. 16 cr. from their own pocket to save Coolie No. 1 vendors from suffering"

Vashu Bhagnani held an explosive press conference on May 22 with select media members, alleging that producer Ramesh Taurani of Tips can’t use the songs from the former’s film, Biwi No 1 (1999). The producer also alleged that the story of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai may be similar to Biwi No. 1. Meanwhile, Bollywood Hungama spoke to a source who provided the other side's version.

Bollywood Hungama spoke to a source, who provided the other side’s version. The source said on condition of anonymity, “Vashu Bhagnani has lost the case in the Supreme Court today. That itself explains why the Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai team is confidently going ahead with the trailer launch tomorrow. If there was any merit in his allegations, would the makers have gone ahead in this manner? Mr. Bhagnani said that he planned to make Biwi No 1 Part 2 with David and Varun. However, Varun had never signed any film with Puja Entertainment after Coolie No 1, not even Biwi No 1. So where is the question of Varun being committed to such a film?”

In the press conference, Vashu Bhagnani claimed, “I was just a namesake producer on Coolie No 1 (2020). It was David ji who 100% handled the production and expenses. I paid David ji big money to make that film; almost Rs. 70 crores, which was not even his worth.”

Reacting sharply to this, the source said, “This is laughable. Vendors were not paid for Coolie No 1. It was Mr. Bhagnani who had to pay them. Yet, the Dhawans ended up paying nearly Rs. 16 crores from their own pocket to clear vendor dues because their reputation was being dragged into the mess. They did it so that people who worked on the film were not left helpless. And now, instead of acknowledging that, Mr. Bhagnani is making these claims in public.”

The source further remarked, “Also, David Dhawan was never paid Rs. 70 crores. If that had happened, David Dhawan would have been the highest-paid director in the country at that time. Can Mr. Bhagnani show any document or put any proof in the public domain to back this claim? Let him release the agreement, the payment proof or any paperwork. Till then, this remains nothing but a wild claim.”

The source continued, “He’s saying that the Dhawans did not call him. But did he call them? He also didn’t. Some people were trying to reach out to Mr. Bhagnani, but he didn’t answer their calls. So to now suggest that only one side should have reached out is unfair. Communication is a two-way street. It is also bewildering that it was known months ago that ‘Chunari Chunari’ is a part of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. Yet, he decided to file the case just a month before the release. Why wait till the last minute? Why create noise only when the film’s trailer launch and release campaign are about to begin? The timing itself raises questions.”

The source then added, “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is in no way connected to Biwi No 1. That film was about a married man having an extramarital affair. Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is about a double pregnancy. The two stories are poles apart. Just because David Dhawan is directing the film and a popular old song is being used, one cannot randomly claim that it is a remake or spiritual successor of Biwi No 1. Anyway, the trailer will be out tomorrow, after which everyone will know the truth. Once the trailer is out and people see that the film has nothing to do with Biwi No 1, will Mr. Bhagnani and Puja Entertainment apologize?”

The source signed off on a pointed note, saying, “The Dhawans have maintained silence for long, but that should not be mistaken for weakness. They have protected their dignity, paid people from their own pockets when required and moved on. But if false narratives are being created now, then the facts also need to come out.”

Namit Malhotra contemplating a masterstroke to prepone Ramayana to October 30, 2026, a week before Diwali

The Namit Malhotra-produced Ramayana is all set for a Diwali 2026 release. For the film, the producer has put together a magnum opus star cast by getting Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, Sai Pallavi and Sunny Deol together under the direction of Nitesh Tiwari. The first teaser dropped earlier in the year, and grabbed eyeballs all across.

And now, Bollywood Hungama has learnt that Ramayana: Part One won't release on Diwali. Before one concludes, let us confirm that the film release could be pre-poned by a week and it might now hit the big screen on October 30, 2026. "Namit Malhotra wants the film to establish itself before the Diwali period. He wants the word of mouth to spread all across, so that the business peaks in the second week. He is here to redefine business by not just bringing a pre-Diwali release, but also a film that scores a bigger second week than the first due to the festive period. The conversation to pre-pone by a week is underway, and a final decision will be taken soon," a source told Bollywood Hungama anonymously.

The source also informs that the release date will be announced once the makers lock the distribution deal for Ramayana. Reportedly, they are negotiating a Rs. 450 crore offer from top distributors, and a final call on whom to sell the film will be taken shortly.

Ramayana's second part will meanwhile release on Diwali 2027, a year after the first instalment of the epic.

Saswata Chatterjee joins Rajkummar Rao starrer Sourav Ganguly biopic Dada: Report

The upcoming film Dada, based on the life of former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, continues to generate buzz with fresh casting developments emerging from the film’s sets. After the makers officially announced the project earlier this year with Rajkummar Rao stepping into the lead role, the latest reports suggest that acclaimed Bengali actor Saswata Chatterjee has now joined the cast of the highly anticipated biopic.

Best known nationwide for portraying the chilling Bob Biswas in Kahaani, Saswata is reportedly set to essay the role of Sourav Ganguly’s father, Chandi Ganguly, in the film. According to reports, the actor has already joined the ongoing shoot alongside the rest of the cast currently filming in Mumbai. The film’s supporting cast is also gradually taking shape. Reports suggest that Aparajita Auddy and Rahul Dev Bose have come on board to portray Sourav Ganguly’s mother Nirupa Ganguly and brother Snehashish Ganguly respectively.

The ensemble is expected to play an important role in showcasing the personal side of the cricketing icon’s journey beyond the stadium. “All three actors are currently shooting in Mumbai. Dada was present on set during the shoot on Sunday. The production team will shoot in Kolkata from the end of this month”, a source was reported saying to Bombay Times.

The biopic officially went on floors in April this year after Rajkummar Rao confirmed the development on social media. Sharing behind-the-scenes photos, including a glimpse of the film’s clapperboard, the actor had written, “And it begins … The one and only #DADA ?? ???? @souravganguly @motwayne #LuvRanjan @gargankur82 @luv_films”.

The film, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, is expected to chronicle Sourav Ganguly’s inspiring journey from his early aspirations of becoming a cricketer to eventually leading the Indian national team and transforming Indian cricket during his captaincy era. Apart from focusing on his professional milestones and achievements on the field, the narrative is also expected to explore his personal life, particularly his relationship with wife Dona Ganguly. Meanwhile, reports also suggest that Tanya Maniktala, who gained attention for her performance in Kill, has been finalised to play Dona Ganguly after several Bengali actresses reportedly auditioned for the part.

With filming now progressing steadily and the team preparing for an extensive Kolkata schedule, Dada remains one of the most anticipated sports biopics currently in development.

Court grants interim relief to Pooja Entertainment in ‘Chunari Chunari’ rights dispute with Tips Music

The ongoing legal dispute between producer Vashu Bhagnani’s Pooja Entertainment and Tips Music has reignited the long-standing debate over ownership of film music rights in the Indian film industry. The controversy erupted after Pooja Entertainment approached the court alleging that Tips recreated the iconic track ‘Chunari Chunari’ for the upcoming film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai without obtaining permission. The song originally featured in Biwi No.1 (1999), produced by Pooja Entertainment. The court has currently granted interim protection in favour of Vashu Bhagnani.

While reacting to the matter on social media, Tips Music insisted that they remain to be “lawful owner” of the music rights and termed the allegations made by Pooja Entertainment as “malicious.” Responding to Tips’ statement, a legal spokesperson representing Vashu Bhagnani said that all music rights, songs, and films referred to in the suit are presently covered under the court’s “status quo” order. The spokesperson further maintained that, at this stage, the issue of lawful ownership or the validity of agreements cannot be determined as the matter is now under the jurisdiction of the court.

The spokesperson also stated that actors, filmmaker David Dhawan, producers, technicians, and everyone associated with the matter may be required to appear before the court and submit their responses, failing which they could face contempt proceedings.

Calling the interim relief a significant development, the spokesperson described it as a win for film producers and said that producers across the industry should unite to safeguard their rights. According to the statement, music companies have generated massive revenues over the years from rights and investments that originally belonged to producers, making it important for producers to collectively assert their claims. The spokesperson added that this interim order is only the beginning and expressed hope that complete justice would eventually be delivered.

Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai stars Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde in lead roles.

EXCLUSIVE: Marathi film Deool Band 2 set for a HUGE start; sells 25,000 + tickets; popular series has a UNIQUE connection with Drishyam franchise

Marathi cinema had a tough time in 2025, but in 2026, it is expected to set new records. Krantijyoti Vidyalay Marathi Madhyam, which released on the first day of the year, collected around Rs. 25 crores. Raja Shivaji continues to remain strong, collecting Rs. 93.10 crores in 18 days and marching towards the Rs. 100 crore mark. And now, another film, Deool Band 2, is all set to surprise. The devotional cum drama film releases in cinemas tomorrow, that is, Thursday, May 21 and is set for a huge opening.

As per the data accessed by Bollywood Hungama, Deool Band 2 has sold more than 25,000 tickets. Despite the film releasing on a non-holiday Thursday, several shows in cities like Mumbai and Pune are already fast-filling. The latter, it seems, is ahead of Mumbai and is driving the collections. City Pride, which has 7 cinemas in Pune, has sold more tickets than PVR Inox. MovieMax opened bookings for Deool Band 2 around 12 noon on Wednesday and within 4 hours, it sold 400 tickets, which is quite a feat.

Deool Band 2 will have a strong weekend, if reports are in its favour. It now remains to be seen if post-midnight and early morning shows are organized by cinemas to cater to the demand on Saturday and Sunday.

Like Deool Band’s first part, Deool Band 2 also stars Mohan Joshi in the role of revered saint Swami Samartha. Deool Band appealed to millions of Swami Samartha’s devotees and moviegoers in general due to its premise, science vs spirituality angle, Mohan Joshi’s terrific portrayal and Pravin Tarde's mass-appealing direction. Deool Band 2 is a spiritual sequel and besides Mohan Joshi, it stars Mahesh Manjrekar, Snehal Tarde, Pravin Tarde, Prasad Oak, Om Bhutkar and others.

Interestingly, the Deool Band series has a fascinating Drishyam connection. The first part was released on July 31, 2015 – the same day as the release of the Hindi remake, Drishyam. And now, Deool Band 2 releases on the same day as the release of Drishyam 3’s Malayalam version.

Drishyam 3 is also set for a record start. The other major release of the week is Chand Mera Dil, starring Lakshya and Ananya Panday. The film is expected to fetch a good start at the box office, thanks to the reduced-price offer. In short, it’ll be a healthy weekend for the industry and exhibitors.

Sonu Nigam sells five Karjat land parcels for Rs 95 lakhs: Report

Playback singer Sonu Nigam has sold 1.067 hectares of land in Karjat, part of the emerging Mumbai 3.0 development corridor, for a total consideration of Rs 95 lakhs, according to property registration documents accessed by CRE Matrix and reported by Hindustan Times.

The recent transactions involve five adjoining land parcels located in Savele village of Karjat. Collectively spread across approximately 1.067 hectares, the land parcels were sold through multiple deals registered on May 12, 2026. Documents reveal that a stamp duty of Rs 5.7 lakhs was paid for the transactions.

As per the registration papers, one land parcel measuring 0.21 hectare was purchased by a group of four individuals for Rs 20 lakhs. Another adjoining plot measuring 0.215 hectare was acquired by two homebuyers for the same amount.

In a separate transaction, a 0.225-hectare parcel was sold to an individual buyer for Rs 20 lakhs. Meanwhile, another 0.20-hectare plot was purchased by two individuals for Rs 17 lakhs. The fifth parcel, measuring 0.217 hectare, was sold for Rs 18 lakhs.

Neither Sonu Nigam nor the buyers have publicly commented on the transactions so far.

Interestingly, this is the second set of land deals involving the singer in Karjat within a short span. In April 2026, Sonu Nigam sold multiple land parcels in the same region totalling over 1.9 hectares for ₹1.95 crore. Those transactions were registered on April 7, 2026, and reportedly involved four separate buyers.

According to the documents, the first parcel measuring 0.405 hectares was sold for Rs 50 lakhs, while another 0.718-hectare plot fetched Rs 75 lakhs. A third parcel spread across 0.607 hectares was sold for Rs 50 lakhs, while the fourth transaction involved a 0.208-hectare plot valued at Rs 20 lakhs. A stamp duty of Rs 11.70 lakhs was reportedly paid for those deals.

Apart from these sales, the Nigam family has also remained active in Mumbai’s real estate market. Earlier this year in February, Sonu Nigam’s father, Agam Kumar Nigam, purchased a 1,197 sq m property in Madh Island, Mumbai, for Rs 10 crores. The acquisition reportedly included a ground-plus-one-floor residential and commercial structure.

In 2025, Sonu Nigam was also in the news for leasing a commercial property in Mumbai’s Santacruz East for a five-year period at a total rental value exceeding Rs 12.61 crores.

Ahaan Panday to shoot energetic dance number in Manchester for Ali Abbas Zafar film? Here’s what we know!

Ahaan Panday is reportedly set to showcase his dancing skills for the first time on the big screen in his upcoming untitled film with director Ali Abbas Zafar. After creating a strong fan following with Saiyaara, the young actor is now expected to step into a more commercial and larger-than-life space with an energetic dance number planned as part of the action entertainer.

While many expected Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara to introduce Ahaan in a more conventional Bollywood hero format, complete with dance and music, the filmmaker instead presented him in an intense and emotionally layered avatar. The film turned Ahaan into an overnight Gen Z sensation, with audiences particularly connecting to his romantic and emotionally vulnerable character.

Now, industry buzz suggests that Yash Raj Films and Ali Abbas Zafar are planning to unveil a completely different side of the actor in his second film. According to sources, a special dance sequence is being planned in Manchester, UK, where a major portion of the film is currently being shot.

“This will be the first time that Ahaan will be seen dancing on the big screen, and we expect this to be a spectacularly special moment. A four-day shoot is being planned to shoot Ahaan singing and dancing just like the stars we have all seen doing for all these years,” a source revealed.

The source further added that the makers want to present Ahaan in a full-fledged star avatar. “The sequence will show Ahaan in his effortless best, and that’s how Aditya Chopra and Ali Abbas Zafar want to present him onscreen.”

Reports also suggest that Ahaan will rehearse for the song during breaks in the UK shooting schedule before filming the track toward the end of the international leg. The makers are reportedly looking to create a song with viral appeal among younger audiences, with plans to finalise a leading choreographer soon.

Alia Bhatt and Sharvari shoot with Samay Raina for India’s Got Latent Season 2 in viral photo

A viral picture featuring Alia Bhatt, Sharvari and comedian Samay Raina has taken social media by storm, sparking widespread speculation around the return of India’s Got Latent. The photos, reportedly clicked at The Habitat in Mumbai, have led fans to believe that the actresses may be appearing as part of the promotional campaign for their upcoming spy-universe film Alpha.

While there has been no official confirmation from the makers or the actors involved, the viral images have already triggered intense discussions online. Many fans appeared excited at the possibility of seeing Alia and Sharvari participate in Samay Raina’s popular digital talent-roast format, especially given the enormous online popularity the show achieved after its launch in 2024.

Created by Samay Raina, India’s Got Latent quickly became one of the most talked-about digital shows in the country due to its unfiltered humour, unpredictable format, and viral guest interactions. However, the show also attracted controversy and criticism over certain segments, eventually leading to a temporary shutdown and legal scrutiny. Following months of silence, Samay recently addressed the situation during his stand-up special Still Alive, confirming that the show would eventually return despite the emotional and legal challenges surrounding it.

Now, with Season 2 already generating buzz, the appearance of mainstream Bollywood actors on the set has divided a section of the internet. While some social media users welcomed the crossover between Bollywood and digital comedy culture, others expressed concern that the show’s original raw and irreverent tone could shift towards a more promotional and corporate-friendly format.

Several users online commented that India’s Got Latent initially stood out because of its unconventional energy and unpredictable guest lineup. According to some viewers, frequent film promotions could dilute the authenticity that made the show popular among younger audiences in the first place.

Meanwhile, Alia Bhatt continues to dominate headlines globally following her recent appearance at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, marking her second outing at the prestigious event. Apart from Alpha, the actress also has Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War in the pipeline alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal.

Sharvari, on the other hand, is currently occupied with promotions for her upcoming film Main Vaapas Aaunga, directed by Imtiaz Ali.

In recent weeks, Aakhri Sawal has also drawn attention due to several high-profile screenings and public discussions surrounding the project. RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale attended a special screening of the film, while a premiere event held in Delhi was attended by Rekha Gupta, who later shared her appreciation for the film on X.

Reports have additionally suggested that a screening of the film took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of invited guests.

At the same time, the film has also faced controversy during its release journey. Aakhri Sawal was reportedly not cleared for release in the UAE after the censor board suggested multiple cuts and modifications. The makers, however, chose not to proceed with the requested changes and retained the film in its original version. The project has also witnessed legal attention, with PILs reportedly filed regarding certain aspects of its content.

Featuring Sanjay Dutt, Amit Sadh, Sameera Reddy, Tridha Choudhury, Neetu Chandra and Namashi Chakraborty, the film is directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Abhijeet Mohan Warang.

Presented by Nikhil Nanda, Aakhri Sawal is produced by Nikhil Nanda and Sanjay Dutt, with Puneet Nanda, Dr. Deepak Singh, Gaurav Dubey, and Ujjwal Anand serving as co-producers. The story, screenplay, and dialogues have been written by Utkarsh Naithani.

The film was released in cinemas on May 15, 2026.

Suraj Nambiar slams rumours surrounding his separation with Mouni Roy: “There is no alimony, no disputes, no third party involved”

Mouni Roy and entrepreneur Suraj Nambiar have once again found themselves at the centre of public attention following their recent separation announcement. A week after officially confirming their split through a joint Instagram statement, Suraj has now addressed the growing speculation surrounding the end of their marriage, firmly denying rumours about alimony, disputes, and third-party involvement.

Taking to Instagram, Suraj shared a lengthy statement calling several reports “baseless” and “malicious.” The note was later reposted by Mouni Roy on her own social media account, indicating a united stance from the former couple amid the ongoing chatter online. In his statement, Suraj wrote, “Recent baseless reports surrounding our separation have been made in bad taste and are absolutely malicious. Let me set the record straight once and for all. There is no alimony. There are no disputes. There is no third party involved”.

He further clarified that the decision to separate was mutual and made with maturity and respect for one another. “Mouni and I chose to part ways together, with mutual respect and with full consideration for each other's wellbeing. That is the truth. Everything else being reported is fiction, and in some cases, a deliberate attempt to vilify two people who have done nothing but ask to be left alone”.

Addressing rumours involving friends and alleged third parties, Suraj strongly objected to innocent individuals being dragged into the matter. He stated, “I want to state this clearly and finally: there is no truth to any of the claims being made about either of us, or about any third party. Dragging other people into this is not cool. Specially innocent friends who have nothing to do with this. Mouni and I have both conducted ourselves with dignity through this period and we expect that same dignity to be extended to us by those reporting on it”.

Calling out what he described as irresponsible reporting, Suraj added, “Media houses have chosen to fabricate narratives that do not exist. These reports have been published without a shred of verification, which is highly unfair. I am calling this out clearly and directly, because staying silent in the face of deliberate misinformation is not something I am willing to do”. He concluded the note by urging everyone to respect the joint statement shared earlier by the couple. “Our joint statement said everything that needed to be said. I request everyone to honour it and to allow both of us the space to move forward in peace. Thank you”.

Mouni Roy and Suraj Nambiar got married in January 2022 in Goa in the presence of close friends and family members. Their wedding, which featured both Malayali and Bengali traditions, had generated massive buzz on social media. Over the years, the couple frequently shared glimpses of their personal life and vacations online, becoming one of the most talked-about celebrity couples.

Three days ago, the former couple officially announced their separation through a joint Instagram note, requesting privacy and understanding from fans and the media as they navigated this personal transition.

EXCLUSIVE: CBFC censors 96 seconds of kissing scenes in Lakshya-Ananya Panday starrer Chand Mera Dil

This week will see the release of Chand Mera Dil, starring Lakshya and Ananya Panday. The film has managed to catch attention due to the popularity of its title track, its intriguing trailer, the chemistry between the lead actors and the fact that it belongs to the intense romance genre, which is currently performing well at the box office. The makers, Dharma Productions, completed the censor process well in advance and in this article, Bollywood Hungama will exclusively focus on the cuts given to the film.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) passed Chand Mera Dil with a U/A 16+ certificate. However, the makers were asked to make two modifications. Firstly, the kissing visuals, lasting 10 seconds, were asked to be deleted and replaced with appropriate shots. Secondly, 'lip lock kissing visuals', lasting 1 minute and 26 seconds, were asked to be deleted. In other words, the CBFC has censored 96 seconds or 1 minute and 36 seconds of kissing shots in Chand Mera Dil. Lastly, the makers were asked to submit a consent letter for all the child artists used in the film.

Once the changes were made, the CBFC handed over the censor certificate on May 8. The length of the film, as mentioned on the censor certificate, is 135.36 minutes. In other words, Chand Mera Dil is 2 hours, 15 minutes and 36 seconds long.

Cocktail 2 song event: Rashmika Mandanna brings the house down with her “Kriti Sanon is F**KING hot!” remark; Shahid Kapoor calls Kriti and Rashmika “superstars in the prime of their careers”

A fun event was hosted by the Cocktail 2 team at a premium restobar in central Mumbai on Sunday, May 17, and was attended by Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, Rashmika Mandanna, producers Dinesh Vijan and Luv Ranjan, director Homi Adajania and music director Pritam Chakraborty. Two unreleased songs were premiered at the event – ‘Mashooka’, featuring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon, and ‘Tujhko’ featuring Shahid and Rashmika Mandanna.

At the event, Shahid Kapoor said, “I am very fortunate to have worked with these two amazing actresses, superstars and beautiful ladies who are extremely professional and in the absolute prime of their careers. Both have given spectacular performances and look amazing. That’s why my character, Kunal, can’t decide who to go with. That’s what the film is all about.”

He added, “With Rashmika, this is my first film. But it never felt so. Whenever we got into any shot, we never even discussed what we were going to do. I just loved that she was all up for spontaneity.”

Rashmika Mandanna added, “I fully agree. Everytime we were working on a scene together, somehow, spontaneously, we would come up with aftertakes. There’ll be one extra ‘tichka’ that we would give and we would not see it coming. We would even rehearse. That’s why the chemistry was magical.”

Kriti Sanon remarked, “You guys have such cute chemistry. It is adorable.” Then she asked the mediapersons, “Guys, how did you like their chemistry? Isn’t it super-cute?”

Next, Rashmika praised the duo, “We have definitely known for a while that you guys have something magical. But something in Cocktail 2 is so different.” Pointing at Kriti, she said, “You look hot; the world knows that. And you are f**king hot.”

Realizing that she uttered a profanity, Rashmika clarified to the media, “Oh, sorry! Censor kar dena. I didn’t say that!” She then rephrased and remarked, “She’s amazing. Look at her.”

Later, Luv Ranjan came on stage and stated, “I am scared because the first part was written by Imtiaz Ali. I am a huge fan of Imtiaz sir. I told Dino and Homi, ‘Better make a good film’. Or else, sabse zyada gaali mujhe padegi ki ‘Yeh hota hai jab Imtiaz Ali ko Luv Ranjan replace karte hai’! I want this to work so that I don’t let him down.”

Dinesh Vijan raised laughs as he joked, “If you don’t like anything in Cocktail 2, it's Luv’s fault!”

Cocktail 2 releases in cinemas on June 19.

BREAKING: Cocktail 2 trailer to be launched on May 29; media gets EXCLUSIVE glimpse of foot-tapping track ‘Mashooka’ and soulful number ‘Tujhko’

The media was invited to the bash with the promise of a surprise.

The surprise turned out to be an exclusive preview of two songs from the film – ‘Mashooka’ and ‘Tujhko’. ‘Mashooka’ features Shahid Kapoor romancing Kriti Sanon in Sicily, Italy, and other picturesque locations. The foot-tapping number sees the duo in a playful, goofy mood before ending with a seductive dance sequence.

‘Tujhko’, meanwhile, is sung by Arijit Singh and focuses on Shahid Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna. The slow romantic number hints that the two characters were college sweethearts before circumstances pulled them apart.

After both songs were unveiled, the media was asked to decide which one should release first. Initially, the journalists were asked to simply shout out the name of their preferred track. Later, a QR code flashed on the screen, directing them to a link where they could cast their vote.

The results were then announced, with ‘Mashooka’ receiving more votes than ‘Tujhko’. This led to some fun banter among the team, as they felt both tracks were equally strong and were in two minds about which one should be unveiled to the world first. Pritam Chakraborty insisted that the team should respect the voters’ choice and release ‘Mashooka’ first. Dinesh Vijan then announced that ‘Mashooka’ would indeed be the first song to be launched, followed by ‘Tujhko’.

Interestingly, ‘Tujhko’ ends with a slate announcing that the much-awaited trailer of Cocktail 2 will be launched on May 29. The film is scheduled to release in cinemas on June 19.

Anurag Kashyap faces legal trouble over alleged remarks on Brahmin Community; Surat court orders FIR

Filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap has landed in legal trouble after a court in Surat directed police to register a criminal case against him over his alleged remarks about the Brahmin community on social media.

The order was passed on Saturday by the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class A S Jani following a private complaint filed by lawyer and Vishva Hindu Parishad leader Kamlesh Raval. According to reports, the court observed that there appeared to be sufficient grounds to examine whether the filmmaker’s posts could have harmed the reputation of a particular community and contributed to social tension.

As part of the order, the court instructed authorities to register a case under sections related to promoting hostility between groups, intentional insult aimed at disturbing public peace, and circulation of allegedly misleading information.

The complaint was filed by Raval, who belongs to the Brahmin community and alleged that Kashyap’s posts on X contained objectionable comments targeting Brahmins. According to the complaint, the controversy began after the filmmaker reacted to criticism surrounding the trailer launch of the Hindi film Phule in April last year.

The complainant claimed that Kashyap not only posted comments viewed as offensive but also continued making remarks while responding to users who opposed his views online. It was further alleged that the posts insulted the wider Brahmin community and had the potential to create division between social groups.

In the complaint submitted before the court, Raval reportedly argued that public figures like Kashyap hold significant influence because of their work in cinema and entertainment. The complaint stated that actors and filmmakers are widely followed by audiences across age groups, making their public statements highly impactful.

The plea also referred to an older social media post allegedly made by Kashyap in January 2020, where he had criticised the Union government and used terms that the complainant described as objectionable towards Hindus.

Reports further stated that several notices and summons had earlier been issued to the filmmaker in connection with the matter. However, according to the complainant, Kashyap did not respond to them, following which a non-bailable warrant was reportedly issued against him.

As of now, Anurag Kashyap has not publicly reacted to the latest court order.

May is a significant month for Anupria Goenka. Her film, IIZ: Indian Institute Of Zombies, was released on May 15, marking her first theatrical outing after four years. She’ll end the month on a celebratory note as she rings in her birthday on May 29. That’s not all. She has another reason to celebrate this month – the talented and gorgeous actress will make her debut at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Anupria Goenka exclusively told Bollywood Hungama, “I am going to Cannes for the premiere of the film called Bombay Stories. It’s being screened at the market section; it’s not in the official selection. Nevertheless, this will be my first visit to Cannes.”

She continued, “After that, I plan to travel around. I haven’t explored Europe much; I have only been to the United Kingdom. So, this birthday, I want to break my pattern and visit other countries (smiles).”

She also revealed, “I am leaving for Cannes on May 18, after IIZ: Indian Institute Of Zombies releases on May 15. Wish me luck (smiles)!”

Anupria on YRF Spy Universe

Anupria Goenka has been a part of two successful films from the YRF Spy Universe – Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) and War (2019). The franchise has come under the scanner after the release of another spy film, Dhurandhar (2025) and its sequel, Dhurandhar The Revenge (2026).

When asked about the criticism directed at the YRF Spy Universe, Anupria opined, “I have no idea about it. The way I live and operate, I don’t really get to know what’s happening. I am very proud of both War and Tiger Zinda Hai and I thoroughly enjoyed shooting for them. I also enjoyed watching Pathaan (2023). For me, War and Tiger Zinda Hai were beautiful, entertaining films. JioStar seeks Rs 250 million in alleged Bollywood film rights dispute with Zee Entertainment: Report

The legal battle between media giants JioStar and Zee Entertainment Enterprises appears to be intensifying. According to an exclusive Reuters report, JioStar has initiated legal proceedings against Zee Entertainment over the alleged unauthorised broadcast of several Bollywood films whose rights were reportedly held by the Reliance-Disney backed company.

As per the report, JioStar filed a plea on May 4 before the Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee, which functions as a mediation and dispute resolution body aimed at facilitating amicable settlements between parties. The matter is now scheduled for hearing on May 25, with Zee being asked to appear before the committee. The documents reportedly state that failure to appear could be treated as refusal to participate in the mediation process.

In its reported 120-page plea, JioStar has accused Zee of broadcasting 12 distinct Bollywood films around 20 times without authorisation. The films allegedly include titles featuring superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan. The Reliance-led company reportedly described Zee as a “habitual infringer” and alleged that the broadcaster continued to “engage in the unauthorised broadcast and exploitation of the films”.

The Reuters report further stated that the dispute over these film rights dates back to exchanges of more than a dozen legal notices and letters between the two companies since February 2025. Sources familiar with the matter reportedly claimed that JioStar may seek damages exceeding Rs 250 million, which is approximately $2.61 million, although the final compensation amount has not yet been confirmed.

Among the films reportedly mentioned in the plea are the 1975 classic Deewaar starring Amitabh Bachchan, as well as Tridev. JioStar has claimed it owns the rights to these films and alleged that Zee aired them without permission.

Zee, however, reportedly responded by stating that the broadcasts were “inadvertent and unintentional”. The company also said it would exercise caution moving forward, while denying liability for the damages being sought.

This latest development comes at a time when the two entertainment giants are already involved in multiple legal disputes. The report noted that both companies are currently engaged in a separate $1 billion arbitration battle in London linked to the collapse of a cricket licensing agreement in 2024.

In another ongoing dispute, Zee Entertainment reportedly filed a lawsuit against JioStar in April 2026 over alleged unauthorised use of copyrighted music. In that case, Zee is reportedly seeking damages of $3 million, alleging that JioStar used its music content at least 50 times after licensing agreements had expired.

JioStar was formed following the $8.5 billion merger of Reliance Industries and Disney’s Indian media assets in 2024. The company currently remains the largest player in India’s estimated $30 billion media and entertainment market. According to Reliance, JioStar commands a 34.2 per cent share of the Indian television market, while Zee claims its own market share has reached a four-year high of 18 per cent.

Neither JioStar nor Zee Entertainment officially commented on the matter.

Vishal Bhardwaj and Shaunak Sen join new film fund initiative supporting independent cinema

What are the vital ingredients an aspiring filmmaker needs when they have a story to tell but no outlet? Beyond a script, they need financial stability, production expertise, and industry access. Addressing this gap, Humans of Cinema and Safarnaama Pictures have launched a landmark feature film co-production fund of Rs 40,00,000 designed to back an emerging filmmaker with a distinct voice and a clear vision.

In a significant boost to the independent ecosystem, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Shaunak Sen (All That Breathes) and globally acclaimed auteur Vishal Bhardwaj have joined the initiative as mentors. Sen is also attached to the selected project as an Executive Producer.

The high-profile jury for the fund includes actor Imran Khan, filmmaker Arati Kadav (Cargo, Mrs), producer Aman Mann (All That Breathes), and renowned author and festival director Aseem Chhabra.

Harshit Bansal, Founder of Humans of Cinema, shared that the idea took shape when Nazim Momin of Safarnaama Pictures—a US-based engineer and producer—reached out via Instagram with a shared vision to back independent Indian cinema. Together, they aim to support a film that is both festival-ready and engaging for local audiences.

Commenting on the initiative, mentor Vishal Bhardwaj said, “Independent cinema survives because some people choose to believe in voices before the world discovers them. Happy to support an initiative that hopes to find and nurture the next fearless generation of filmmakers from India.”

Shaunak Sen, who will Executive Produce the chosen script, added, “Avenues for independent cinema today are rapidly wilting, and I'm delighted that Humans of Cinema is instating a filmmaker-forward seed fund. I'm excited to work with the chosen scripts.”

The jury also expressed a collective urgency for such a platform. Imran Khan stated, "Initiatives to discover and nurture the next generation of filmmaking talent are sorely needed, and I am thrilled to support the HOC Film fund.”

Calling the co-production fund a “logical next step”, Arati Kadav said, “I am excited to see the young voices and stories I will meet through this venture and I hope this goes from strength to strength in the coming years, where we will see many brilliant and radical voices finding support in this ecosystem.”

Aseem Chhabra added, “This will be a great opportunity for a young filmmaker who is keen to make their first feature and take it to an international festival. Such endeavors are essential if we want to take Indian cinema to the next level in the global market.”

Harshit Bansal emphasized that the country does not lack talent, but rather the avenues to turn scripts into reality. “Our intention is to find the next distinct filmmaking voice from the country, & offer them the financial, production & industry support they need to not just make their films, but also to help them find the right festival & distribution support.

"We feel fortunate that Shaunak Sen & Vishal Bhardwaj have joined our initiative as mentors, with Shaunak also being attached to the selected project as an Executive Producer. Their support & insights will be invaluable for the selected filmmaker as well as us. We’re also grateful to Shaunak’s production company, Kiterabbit Films, for offering us crucial support for this initiative, and to our jury members who are lending their expertise out of their sheer goodwill and a passion to support good cinema,” he added.

The fund is open to all Indian citizens aged 18 and above who have directed at least two short films or one feature film. Interested applicants can submit their projects for a non-refundable fee of Rs 1499.

Ranbir Kapoor has invested in a premium land parcel in Ayodhya, adding a significant real estate acquisition to his portfolio at a time when the city is witnessing rapid cultural and infrastructural growth. The actor has purchased land at The Sarayu, a large-scale plotted development by House of Abhinandan Lodha, according to information reported by PTI.

The transaction is valued at approximately Rs 3.31 crores for a total area of 2,134 square feet. The property forms part of The Sarayu, a 75-acre development situated along the banks of the Sarayu river. The project is designed as a premium lifestyle destination and will include a clubhouse, hospitality facilities, lifestyle amenities, and a luxury hotel managed by The Leela.

Speaking about the investment, Ranbir Kapoor said, “I believe Ayodhya has chosen me, and I have just answered this calling. Ayodhya is deep rooted in our history and is a critical part of our cultural fabric. This land at The Sarayu became my gateway to ensuring this becomes a part of my legacy for my family. HoABL made this journey seamless, transparent and easy with their fully digital process.”

The investment comes at an interesting phase in the actor’s career, especially as Ranbir is preparing to portray Lord Ram in Ramayana, one of the most anticipated Indian film projects currently in development. His purchase in Ayodhya, a city deeply associated with the Ramayana, has naturally drawn attention online and among fans.

Commenting on the development, Abhinandan Lodha, chairman of House of Abhinandan Lodha, said, “Ayodhya stands at the centre of India's cultural and spiritual resurgence. With The Sarayu, we are creating a benchmark for spiritually rooted, world-class land developments. Ranbir Kapoor's investment reflects the growing conviction among discerning buyers who are looking at Ayodhya not just emotionally, but also as a strategic, future-forward destination.”

EXCLUSIVE: Jr NTR to visit Mumbai for NTRNeel teaser showcase ahead of birthday reveal

As excitement around Jr NTR and director Prashanth Neel’s upcoming film NTRNeel continues to grow, fresh industry buzz suggests that fans may be in for a much bigger surprise ahead of the actor’s birthday celebrations this year. The highly anticipated project, tentatively referred to as NTR31 and widely rumoured to be titled Dragon, is already among the most talked-about pan-India films currently in production.

The makers have officially confirmed that the film’s first glimpse will be unveiled at midnight on May 19, coinciding with Jr NTR’s birthday on May 20. However, according to an independent industry source, the celebrations may extend beyond just a digital reveal.

“As the first glimpse of NTRNeel is set to be released at midnight on 19th May, on the special occasion of NTR’s birthday on 20th May, it has been heard that NTR himself will be coming to Mumbai to showcase the teaser to the media. While the superstar enjoys a massive fan base across the nation, his visit to the City of Dreams will be a treat for his fans,” the source shared.

While there has been no official confirmation from the makers regarding a Mumbai event yet, the report has already sparked massive excitement online. Jr NTR enjoys a strong fan following not just in the South, but across Hindi-speaking markets as well, especially after the global success of RRR. A media interaction or teaser showcase in Mumbai would further underline the film’s ambitious pan-India positioning.

Industry chatter also suggests that the upcoming glimpse may not be a standard teaser. Reports indicate that the video could be a detailed world-building introduction running over three minutes, offering audiences a larger peek into the film’s scale, tone, and visual universe. There is also growing speculation that the makers may finally unveil the official title during the launch.

Mouni Roy and Suraj Nambiar CONFIRM separation after four years of marriage: “We will cherish our friendship”

Mouni Roy and her husband Suraj Nambiar have officially confirmed their separation after four years of marriage. The couple issued a joint statement on Thursday following days of intense speculation surrounding their relationship on social media.

Rumours about trouble in their marriage first began circulating earlier this week after fans noticed that Mouni and Suraj had unfollowed each other on Instagram. Social media users also pointed out that several recent photographs featuring Suraj had reportedly been removed or archived from Mouni’s profile, while some wedding pictures continued to remain visible. Soon after, Suraj’s Instagram account was deactivated, adding further fuel to the speculation.

The situation gained more attention when reports surfaced that actor Disha Patani, who is considered close to Mouni, had also unfollowed Suraj on the platform. Addressing the growing speculation, Mouni and Suraj released a joint note requesting privacy and urging media outlets to refrain from spreading false narratives about their relationship. “We note with dismay the unnecessary and intrusive attention into our personal lives by certain quarters of the media,” the statement read.

The couple further confirmed their decision to separate, while clarifying that the process is being handled privately and respectfully. “We would like to state that we have decided to part ways and are taking the necessary time to address matters privately and amicably,” they shared.

Referring to the rumours and discussions circulating online, the two stated that several assumptions made about their relationship were inaccurate. “Attempts have been made to sensationalize our private lives by circulation of fictitious narratives and blatant falsehoods, which do not reflect the reality of our relationship,” the note added.

Mouni and Suraj also emphasised that the decision was mutual and based on evolving personal priorities. “After thoughtful reflection on evolving personal priorities, we have mutually chosen to move forward on separate paths with respect and understanding,” they wrote.

Is Prime Video planning bigger push for TVF content? Here’s what we know!

Prime Video and The Viral Fever continue to strengthen their collaboration as several TVF-backed shows have emerged among the platform’s most successful Indian originals in recent years. According to an industry insider, the growing popularity of TVF content has encouraged Prime Video to explore the possibility of bringing more of the production house’s digital content from YouTube onto its streaming platform.

Sharing insights into the development, the source stated, “TVF’s Panchayat, Sapne vs Everyone S2 and others emerged as one of Prime Video’s biggest successes in recent times, the OTT giant is now looking to bring more of TVF’s content from YouTube onto its platform. Since TVF’s shows already have a massive audience base on YouTube and across their own channel, this presents a perfect opportunity for Prime Video to tap into a new market and reach a much wider audience base.”

One of the biggest success stories in the collaboration between TVF and Prime Video has been Panchayat. The rural comedy-drama, starring Jitendra Kumar, has developed a strong fan following across India and remains one of the platform’s most talked-about web series. Following the positive response to Season 3, which released in May 2024, the show has already been renewed for a fourth season.

Another key title in the partnership has been Aspirants, which originally began as a YouTube release before moving to Prime Video for its second season. The series, centred around UPSC aspirants and friendship, became especially popular among younger viewers and competitive exam students. Its success has now led to the renewal of a third season.

Industry observers believe that moving more TVF content to OTT platforms could help streaming services tap into viewers who already actively engage with the company’s content online. At the same time, it may also help TVF expand the reach of its existing shows beyond YouTube audiences and strengthen its position in the premium streaming market.

EXCLUSIVE: Anupria Goenka BLASTS fake Instagram post on intimate scene claim: "Who would cross all boundaries? I have a mind of my own...It paints such a feeble picture of a woman"

Thanks to affordable internet and the surge of social media, information travels faster than ever. The flip side, however, is that fake news and disinformation also have the potential to spread like wildfire. Prominent actress Anupria Goenka experienced this last week when an Instagram handle called ‘Sarcastic Tube’ put up a post attributing a quote to her. The alleged quote claimed that an actor lost control and crossed all limits while shooting an intimate scene with her. The post further claimed that Anupria couldn’t understand what was happening during the scene. The shocking part is that Anupria never made any such statement. She immediately called out the mischief-monger page on her Instagram story and slammed them for their behaviour. It’s been seven days since the controversial post was uploaded, and it continues to remain on the page. At the time of publishing this article, the post could still be seen on the Instagram handle and had not been deleted despite the actress tagging the page and making it clear that she never gave any such quote.

Anupria Goenka recently spoke to Bollywood Hungama exclusively for IIZ: Indian Institute Of Zombies. When asked about this controversial post and whether she plans to take legal action against the handle, Anupria said, “I don’t want to, as I don’t want to give that much energy to it. I don’t even know why and where it has come from. I had said something regarding intimate scenes 2 years back in an interview. Even then, I was misquoted. If you pick out one line in isolation from an interview and make it into a headline, it sounds very different from my entire intention behind the conversation.”

She continued, “Even in that interview, I had clearly stated that, for the most part, I have had very comfortable co-actors. The journalist kept prodding me about it, and I said that there was one instance where I had an issue and communicated to the person that I was not comfortable. Otherwise, on our sets, it has been a very safe environment, at least as per my experience. When you say something, the other person will definitely listen and understand whether you’re comfortable or not. Most directors are very, very sensitive, and so are the co-actors.”

She added, “The idea was to put the attention on agency, that is, being aware of what you want to do and don’t want to do, being very open about it, and not feeling pressured to do something that you are not comfortable with. But it was communicated as if someone had taken advantage of me. It’s so bizarre. I didn’t talk like that. Even then, it didn’t sound as bad as it did in that Instagram post. This one said, ‘He crossed all boundaries.’ Who would cross all boundaries? And why would I say, ‘I didn’t know what was happening?’ I have a mind of my own; why would I not know what was happening? Who talks like that?”

Anupria remarked, “It paints such a feeble picture of a woman, that ‘I am so weak, someone could come and take advantage of me, I could do nothing and now I feel sorry about it’. I’ll neither talk like nor will I ever promote it in the media. I don’t know where it's coming from. I have done no interview in the recent past.”

She concluded by saying, “I am not planning to take any action. I said what I had to say.”

EXCLUSIVE: Deepak Mukut eyes Dussehra release for Emraan Hashmi’s Gunmaaster G9; reveals The Bhootnii suffered due to screen-sharing issues: “PVR INOX Pictures distributed Raid 2; it got priority…”

After a rocking special appearance in The Ba***ds Of Bollywood (2025), Emraan Hashmi is expected to give fans a treat with Gunmaaster G9, co-starring Genelia Deshmukh and Aparshakti Khurana. The film reunites him with director Aditya Datt after 20 years. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, producer Deepak Mukut opened up on the release plans.

Deepak Mukut confessed, “We are looking at releasing in the Dussehra week, on October 16. There’s no other release scheduled for the next three weeks, which would give us an advantage. We are also looking at bringing our film to cinemas on October 9. Drishyam 2 will release on October 2, but that’s okay. Mine is an action masala film, while Drishyam is in a different zone. Our target audience is the youth and those who loved the OG Emraan avatar of the mid-2000s. The youngsters who loved Emraan then are now in their 40s or 50s. That is our audience. At the same time, our film will appeal to the youngsters as well. My son is 20 and even he listens to the old songs of Emraan.”

Deepak Mukut is clear that he wants to be extra careful in choosing the release date after his bad experience last year, “My last film, The Bhootnii, clashed with Raid 2. Since PVR Inox was the distributor of Raid 2, it got priority, while my film didn’t get sufficient shows. But people did come wherever it got shows and did a business of around Rs. 10 crores. If I had more shows, my film would have done better. Utna loss nahin hota jitna mujhe hua hai abhi.”

At present, he’s gearing up for a car chase sequence shoot in Mumbai of Gunmaaster G9, followed by the Uttarakhand-Delhi schedule in June. In the previous part of the interview, he praised Emraan Hashmi and music composer Himesh Reshammiya for their great work. In this part, he added, “Genelia Desmukh is superb in the film and I appreciate the hard work she has done. Riteish praised us and told us, ‘You have given her a superb role’.”

Future plans

Deepak Mukut has the much-awaited sequel of Nayak (2001), starring Anil Kapoor, in his kitty. He said, “It’s a work in progress. Anil ji and I will announce together soon. Sanam Teri Kasam 2 is also in the offing. The way the first part performed on re-release was nothing short of a miracle. Some films get their rightful due a little late. Sanam Teri Kasam (2016) is one such film.”

SCOOP: Shahid Kapoor in talks to join Varun Dhawan in Anees Bazmee directed No Entry 2

Shahid Kapoor is among the most celebrated actors of Hindi Cinema, who is gearing up for the release of Cocktail 2. Known for his phenomenal acting talent, the actor was in talks with Anees Bazmee for a comic caper titled Ram Aur Shyam. But the film didn't materialise due to reasons best known to the stakeholders.

But the latest we hear is that the combo might team up for the first time soon. According to reliable sources, Anees Bazmee is in talks with Shahid Kapoor to come on board the sequel to his 2005 cult comedy, No Entry. "While Varun Dhawan is locked to play one of the three leads, the makers have initiated a conversation with Shahid Kapoor. The actor has heard the basic idea and will soon take the complete narration," a source informed Bollywood Hungama.

The source further informs that if Shahid agrees, this could mark the first ever collaboration of two of the most talented actors of the last 2 decades - Shahid Kapoor and Varun Dhawan. The dynamic shared by the two in the film will be similar to what Salman Khan and Aamir Khan shared in Andaz Apna Apna. "It's No Entry but with a twist. The producer Boney Kapoor is trying to take things a notch higher by getting Varun and Shahid together."

If everything goes as planned, No Entry 2 will go on floors towards the end of 2026 with a marathon schedule.

Shape of Momo set for release on May 29 with support from Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media

Award-winning independent feature Shape of Momo, directed by filmmaker Tribeny Rai, is all set for its theatrical release in India and Nepal on May 29, 2026. The film, which has already travelled across several prestigious international film festivals, will now reach audiences in theatres with support from Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media.

Produced by Dalley Khorsani Production and co-produced by Kathkala Films, the film has also received backing from acclaimed filmmakers Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti and Payal Kapadia, who have joined the project as executive producers.

Set in a Himalayan village in Sikkim, Shape of Momo revolves around the lives of women from different generations within the same family. The film explores themes of womanhood, emotional inheritance, identity, belonging and the complicated relationship individuals often share with the idea of home. The story reflects both the comfort and emotional weight associated with one’s roots and upbringing.

The ensemble cast includes late Bhanu Maya Rai, Gaumaya Gurung, Pashupati Rai, Rahul Mukhia and Shyamashree Sherpa. The film has already earned widespread critical acclaim after premiering at prestigious festivals including the Busan International Film Festival and the San Sebastián International Film Festival. It also received recognition and awards during its global festival journey.

Speaking about her debut feature, Tribeny Rai described, "Shape of Momo is my debut feature, told from a personal lens and shaped by the women and experiences around me. As someone who observes closely, I always felt my first film had to come from that space. To now have the film release in theatres in India feels like a significant milestone for our team. We make films with the hope of experiencing them on the big screen, but we’re also aware of the challenges independent films like ours face, so to see it come together like this feels surreal but also rewarding."

She further added, "Spirit Media is one of the few Indian studios actively creating space for independent, creator-driven cinema, and we couldn’t have asked for better partners. To have Payal Kapadia champion the film is also very special, she has opened up so many avenues for Indian filmmakers, especially women filmmakers like me, and I’m deeply grateful for her support. At its heart, Shape of Momo is a film for everyone, its emotional core is universal. It looks at relationships and identity in ways that go beyond geography, and I hope audiences will find something of themselves within it."

Backing the film’s release, Rana Daggubati asserted, "Shape of Momo is a quietly powerful film that gently unfolds and stays with you. Tribeny brings a very personal lens to the film. She has a refreshing, distinct voice as a filmmaker in the way she observes her characters and their world. At Spirit, we’re drawn to stories that are deeply rooted in their world and told with emotional honesty, and Shape of Momo really reflects that. We’re committed to supporting filmmakers like Tribeny, and we’re excited to bring this film to audiences."

Talking about the film, Executive Producer Zoya Akhtar shared, “Shape of Momo is a deeply personal peek into the lives of three generations of Sikkimese women. With rare emotional truth, Tribeny Rai’s voice as a filmmaker is confident and clear. We love watching stories from across India, stories that bring distinct, lived-in perspectives and expand the world of Indian cinema. We are so excited that the audience that may never have visited parts of our diverse and lush country, including places like Sikkim, will now get to experience a beautiful and authentic story from there in the cinema.”

Executive Producer Reema Kagti added, “Tribeny Rai’s Shape of Momo is a film made with sensitivity, warmth and emotional insight. There’s an intimacy to the storytelling, but also an expansiveness in the way it engages with family, intergenerational bonds, womanhood, quiet rebellion, and identity. The film arrives at a moment when some of the most exciting independent cinema in India is emerging from newer voices and regions, especially from the Northeast. Films like Boong, Raptures and Village Rockstars have opened up exciting new creative possibilities within Indian independent cinema, and it’s wonderful to see Shape of Momo become part of that journey. I’m really glad that Shape of Momo is now finding its way to theatres, and I hope audiences across India discover the film and connect with it."

Executive Producer Payal Kapadia added, “Shape of Momo is a deeply moving coming-of-age story of a young woman conflicted by her yearning for a home. The film feels refreshingly contemporary, and Tribeny's stance is strong and uncompromising, yet by the end, very touching as well. I am so thrilled that this layered film - after a commendable festival journey around the world- will now find its way to audiences across India. I really hope more people come and see this wonderful movie.”

With its women-led crew, emotionally layered narrative and strong international reception, Shape of Momo is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated independent theatrical releases of the year.
