Akshay Kumar has found his new favourite thing to do, apart from working on the sets almost round the clock. The actor has resorted to finding a muse in his co-stars beginning with Kriti Sanon on the sets of Bachchan Pandey and now Nushrratt Bharuccha on the sets of Ram Setu. All set to play an archeologist in Ram Setu with Jacqueline Fernandez and Nushrratt Bharuccha as the leading ladies, Akshay Kumar has turned part-time photographer on the sets.

Unfinished Audiobook Review: Priyanka Chopra Jonas walks you through her life in her calm soothing voice

At the turn of adulthood, Priyanka Chopra Jonas was crowned Miss World. This was followed by her journey as an actor in Bollywood to a pop artist in the West to finally establishing herself as a global star. Now, 20 years down the line with innumerable awards, achievements, and a massive fan following, at the age of 38, she came out with her memoir titled "Unfinished". In her memoir, she narrates her story of growing up in the small town of Bareilly in India's Uttar Pradesh to studying in an American high school and getting bullied for her skin colour to coming back home and ending up participating in a pageant that changed her life around. Apart from her professional life, she takes us through her personal life and the role her family played in her becoming what she is today.

Unfinished Audiobook Review: Priyanka Chopra Jonas walks you through her life in her calm soothing voice

For the audiobook version of the book available on the app Audible, Priyanka Chopra Jonas has herself voiced her story in an 8-hour long narration divided into different chapters indicating different phases of her life. Her voice is one that is very familiar to Indians and several across the globe, even to those who are not a fan of the movies. Priyanka's accent is one that has often been a topic of discussion and that needs to be spoken about now as well when we discuss the audiobook version.

In one of her interviews, I recall Priyanka saying that her accent changes with the place she is in and as an actor, it is a great skill set to have. In her own words, today, Priyanka Chopra Jonas considers both Mumbai and Los Angeles her home. Shuttling between continents for work and personal life, she sure has added different cultures to her vibrant personality. However, throughout the book, she has a rather exotic accent that is globally appealing and does not change as she takes us through the different phases of her personal life. The pace of the book is constant and the actress has done very well in enunciating each word really well.

I jumped into the audiobook experience, expecting a dramatic reading of her life. Having lived the moments she chose to share with the public, one can only expect her to recreate the emotions through her voice. There are no distinct voices for different characters in the book as she quotes them. However, her calm and soothing voice proves extremely impactful when she talks in detail about the grief she experienced after the demise of her father and towards the end of the book when she recalls the heart-wrenching stories she heard on her trips across the world as UNICEF ambassador.

What adds to the audio experience is the familiarity of the people and the places that Priyanka is talking about in the book in most scenarios. Being a public figure, most people mentioned in the book have also been seen by people thanks to the relentless paparazzi culture in India who do a better job at keeping an eye on you than your neighbouring aunty/uncle. This cause helps the listener with imagining the scenarios mentioned in the book.

In the book, Priyanka says that she will share only 90% of her life and keep the 10% of it for herself. However, it is evident that the actress has only touched the surface of her magnificent

life and an 8-hour narration of her life would not be able to encompass it all. We all know that she is far from done achieving her goals and dreams and the title of her memoir makes it all the more clear. To quote Priyanka Chopra Jonas, “Can't stop. Won't stop.”

All said and done, this is a story that needs to be heard and can be taken as an introduction to the life that is ‘The Priyanka Chopra Jonas’.

“We are planning everything even better and will be informing a new date soon”, says Adivi Sesh on the postponement of Major teaser

After four consecutive hits Kshanam, Oopiri, Ami Thumi and Evaru, up next for Evaru star Adivi Sesh is a true-life soldier’s tale Major where he plays the national hero Sandeep Uunnikrishnan. Mahesh Babu who produces the film says Adivi Sesh has been travelling with this story for a long time and he fits the bill completely.

“We are planning everything even better and will be informing a new date soon”, says Adivi Sesh on the postponement of Major teaser

Sadly the first teaser of Major had to be postponed due to Covid19. Says Adivi, “I definitely feel sad for the team due to the unfortunate circumstances for our director whose father passed away, and the Covid situation put a dent in our Mumbai event. We are planning everything even better and will be informing a new date soon.”

Regarding shooting through the pandemic Adivi says, “We are shooting, as we did during the height of the pandemic with our proper protocol followed on the set. The reality of the Covid world is that you can mitigate risk. You can’t eliminate it.”

Adivi feels a lockdown no longer makes sense. “The idea of locking ourselves up doesn’t make sense. Neither does not masking up properly.”

While the rest of the country shows a stunning slump in movie-theatre attendance Adivi is happy Telugu films are doing well. “Not only well, Telugu cinema is doing exceptionally well. Attendance wise. Collections are extremely high. A Telugu film Jathi Ratnalu just broke a million at the US box office. We hope the same comes back for Hindi soon as our film Major is a pan- India film. Since the start of 2021 we have had eight films in Telugu either make their money back or make a big profit. What Bhangra is to Punjabis cinema is to the Telugu people. I can’t wait for the world to see Major.”

Ankita Lokhande to reprise her role as Archana in Pavitra Rishta 2

Ankita Lokhande will be reprising her role as Archana in season 2 as well as the show is in its pre-production stage. The makers feel that it would be better to bring in a fresher to fill in Sushant Singh Rajput’s shoes rather than bring back an already known face knowing the sentimental value of the show and his character Manav. Hiten Tejwani, who played the role of Manav in the latter half of the show, will not be returning for his role.

On second anniversary of IncInk Records, Ranveer Singh speaks on his label's expansion into becoming a genre-fluid artist collective in India

Actor Ranveer Singh’s passion project IncInk completes two glorious years. He had founded this initiative with Navzar Eranee. He is extremely proud of how it has become a creative platform for budding, talented musicians and is empowering them to shine bright.

On second anniversary of IncInk Records, Ranveer Singh speaks on his label's expansion into becoming a genre-fluid artist collective in India

Ranveer says, “When I had decided to chase my dream of becoming an actor years ago, it wasn’t easy getting my foot in the door. I was fortunate enough to build my career through a combination of hard work, passion, and self-belief. I told myself back then that when I become relatively successful, I will try and do something for my fellow dreamers. That’s when the germ of IncInk was sown in my head.”

He adds, “Today, I feel grateful to have been able to provide a platform to some outstanding new talents. I am blown away by the music that these brilliant young artists have created and I am continually impressed at their ability to express and create art that is disruptive. The entire team at IncInk has given it their all in backing these talents and I thank them with all my heart. The team’s effort has been relentless in fuelling the passion of these poets and singers.”

Ranveer feels the discoveries made by IncInk, Kaam Bhaari, Spitfire, Devil – The Rhymer and SlowCheeta, have turned out to be prodigies and he couldn’t be happier to see them soar.

“They have evolved into serious musical prodigies of our generation who are now being appreciated far and wide. IncInk has tried to be a vehicle for their artistic growth, becoming the wind beneath the wings of these rare gems. I am proud of what the team has achieved in a short span of two years, and I’m thrilled about the vibrancy and diversity we have added to the music scene in India,” he says.

Now, IncInk aims to expand its scope of work and become an artist collective that serves as a platform for new, un-showcased artists and ideas across India and diversify into all genres. Ranveer says, “Being fluid in this endeavour through genre music, video, visual art, and experiences is what we do here. Ink is a beacon for artists. I would like it to be a lighthouse on the shore. If we can inspire something new, reach somebody unreachable and touch someone so they feel included, that would be fulfilling.”

He adds, “I would be going back into the past and inspiring that younger me to never be dejected, to work harder and keep experimenting, trying new things and playing with ideas. When something doesn't work, no problem, build again. I would nurture the child in me and encourage that kid to just keep playing and expressing. I had the hustle in me to make my own luck in order to become something.”

He further says, “People who work just as hard, oftentimes don't get that chance and may never get it. Mine was a million to one shot, I was prepared to risk it all and I found my opportunity. Even though I often felt discouraged I persevered. I just want to say if you don't get it, if you fall, don't stay down, get up, keep playing. Always be inspired to play. I want to lead by example. So, that's what we will do through IncInk. Keep playing, falling and getting up for the run again. The child in you makes you joyous, discover and rediscover him always.”

About IncInk’s genre-fluid vision forward, Navzar says, “The collective is open. We want to discover and work genre-agnostic so whether it's electronica or jazz musician/band or singer-songwriter or folk musicians from the interiors of India - we don't want to be confined or be boxed into just this or that. This is a callout to all then artists who are authentic in their vision and craft, if you have that edge - we are on.”

He adds, “IncInk is not just a label. It's a philosophy that lives true. All artists at the collective are handpicked for the highly skilled artisan and we want to continue to collaborate with creative artists. As an artist's collective, we will not be limited to music releases, videos but we expand on to bigger visions being executed via - IP's, products and collaborations. The future of IncInk is as an artist collective.”

Navzar further reveals, “We will perform artistic collaborations and empower the creation of product that moves the soul. Every artist will have a share and everyone will play a part. Our work with the deaf community with the Indian Sign Language (ISL) initiatives have been something the moved my soul from the beginning. We want to help in a big way - and those are the lives we want to touch and expand further.”

“We are waiting for Kartik Aaryan to test negative” - Anees Bazmee

The shooting of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 was suspended again this month when its leading man Kartik Aaryan was tested positive for Covid19. Now Kartik is well on the way to recovery and spending his time watching a whole lot of movies and enjoying his mother’s cooking.

“We are waiting for Kartik Aaryan to test negative” - Anees Bazmee

Director Anees Bazmee is not worried at all. “We have already shot more than 60 percent of the film. Shooting stopped in Lucknow in March 2020 and the lockdown followed .But we made up for lost time when we resumed shooting. And now Kartik’s Covid which came as a shock is not a big problem. Kartik is a very fast worker. He picks up his lines in minutes. We will be back on track as soon as he re-joins us. We are all waiting for him.”

Anees is all praise for Kartik. “He is a pleasure to work with. Always on time, always professional, never any tantrums. Kartik has a smile for everyone. Having him on the set brings very pleasant vibes into the process of shooting. We need that positivity right now.”

Anees flashbacks to the time he first saw Kartik on screen. “I had full faith in him from his first film. When I saw Pyaar Ka Punchnaama I knew he was going to make it really big. I wanted to work with him then only. But everything takes its time in life. I am glad we are working on Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 together. His comic timing is superb.”

As good as Akshay Kumar’s in the first Bhool Bhulaiyaa film? Anees demurs, “I had nothing to do with Bhool Bhulaiyaa with Akshay Kumar. So I wouldn’t know.”

The incredibly gifted Fahadh Faasil had an accident at the beginning of March which he is still recovering from. Yes, it was that serious. We’ve been hearing and reading a lot of speculative unsubstantiated reports on how the mishap happened and how serious it was.

Fahadh Faasil finally sets the record straight about his accident

I finally got the truth from the horse’s mouth. Says Fahadh, “Yes, I had an accident a few weeks back. I am still recovering. The stitches should go off this week.”

When I urged him to share more details the legendary Malayali actor replied, “I had a fall during the shooting of Malayankunju. It was a landslide sequence. Mechanically done. We lost control over the speed. I only realized how serious it was when my doctors broke down. I should be back to normal in about a week. It could have been avoided. But I guess I needed this going off track and getting back.”

EXCLUSIVE: John Abraham will be seen playing a mouth organ for a song in Satyameva Jayate 2

Bhushan Kumar himself gets involved in the creative process of different aspects of the film including the music. Talking about it with Bollywood Hungama, he said, “From the beginning I wanted to train myself because back then when I had just joined, I was eager to learn about everything. In a song, the lyrics should be mind-blowing, it should be hummable, the tune should be mind-blowing, the intro and outro of the music, whether a guitar should be played or a mandolin or a sitar. All these things I would minutely observe. Even today I check all these things.”

Talking about incorporating a mouth organ in the upcoming film Satyameva Jayate 2, he said, “One of our songs is going to come in the film Satyameva Jayate 2 for which I told Rochak (Kohli) that lets shoot with a mouth organ as nobody has heard mouth organ in a long time. So, he shot with a mouth organ. And Milap Zaveri(director) is a very massy person and he said that he will make John shoot with the mouth organ itself. So, he shot the song with a mouth organ.”

Satyameva Jayate 2 is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar’s T-Series and Monisha Advani, Madhu Bhojwani and Nikkhil Advani’s Emmay Entertainment. The film also stars Divya Khosla Kumar and will hit the theatres on Eid.

The Life Of Pi actor Suraj Sharma opens up on his journey and his new film The Illegal

Suraj, it's been 12 years since your phenomenal debut in The Life Of Pi. How has the Life of Suraj been during these years?
Life of Suraj has been like most lives. Full of ups and downs. I have been blessed however to get work in this film industry and meet the people I’ve had a chance to meet. I have lived in New York for the past 7 years and I love it here. I obviously miss home and India though. I’m hoping to learn and grow more as an actor and as a person and see what life has in store for me.

The Life Of Pi actor Suraj Sharma opens up on his journey and his new film The Illegal

In The Illegal I can see you have evolved into quite an Ang Lee Young Man… There is anger, rage, bitterness and finally acceptance in your performance. Where did all of this come from?
I feel like everybody has emotions of struggle and frustrations in their life that they can tap into if they wish. I did the same. Also learning of these stories of immigrants in America and making friends with some of them, made me learn and realize things I didn’t before.

Like what?
A struggle and an emotional limbo that was and is still very hard for me to grasp. I tried to bring that into the performance and it had a strong effect on my character Hassan’s psyche. The loss he feels, the disillusionment, the distance, his endless desperation to do what he loves. Learning these things about him and taking to my director Danish Renzu about these helped us both in trying to bring Hassan to life.

A lot has changed for Asian actors in America and the West since Life Of Pi. Do you feel that change? Have you benefited from the 'colour blindness' that has lately crept into the casting of brown and black actors?
I feel like when I got here however many years ago things were way worse. Things have gotten better. There are better roles out here for people of colour .But more importantly our stories are being told. There are more and more people of colour as producers, directors, investors, and very importantly writers. Their stories and perspective shape the roles the actors get to play. This space is becoming more and more honest and wholesome which is a great and healthy sign for the industry and the people.

The Illegal casts as you Hassan, an immigrant from Daryaganj chasing the American Dream. How much did you identify with the role? How much research did you have to undertake before plunging into this complex part?
I identified with Hassan quite a bit. Like Hassan I came from Delhi to the states to study film. Had dreams and an almost whimsical belief in how it would go. The process has been far harder than I or Hassan assumed and life has brought with it challenges to grow from.

The Life Of Pi actor Suraj Sharma opens up on his journey and his new film The Illegal

Did you use your personal experiences in the US to play Hassan?
While in New York I spoke to many waiters and delivery guys at Indian restaurant while trying to get my homesick Indian food-fix. Slowly these turned into friendships and a few opened up to me about their families and how they feel like they’re stuck here. This really hit me and I feel for them. I also admire their positive attitude towards life despite these intense struggles. So when I read the script of The Illegal years later my mind went to them first. I talked to them more and found it important to do justice to their stories through this one. I hope the spirit of Hassan in his curiosity and kindness comes through as much as the loss and the frustration.

What are your forthcoming assignments? Are you happy with the progress you have made as an actor?
Next I am to do a film called Wedding Seasons. We are shooting in Canada and I am really looking forward to this project! There are more projects to do later during the year. I am hopeful that I get to be more busy this year than last. Maybe even shoot in India again, which is something I miss and want to do.

What developments in your personal life? Are you married? Or are you seeing anyone?
I am not married yet. Need to learn and grow a lot first.

The past year has been tough on the entire civilization. How has it been for you? What would your takeaways be from the pandemic?
I have dual emotions about the year. On the one hand the suffering of so many and the distancing from people has been really tough. It is a sad reality that we will overcome soon I hope. On the other hand I’ve had time for myself after a long time. I spent a long time camping out in the forests of America. Living in nature after so long in the city really helped me get my energy back. I went to a lot of the national parks when not many people were there and spent a lot of time writing songs, exercising, hiking and learning how to cook. I feel like it’s been a long year but one I needed to live.

Finally Irrfan who played the grownup version of you in Life Of Pi passed away last year. What did that mean to you?
It was extremely saddening to hear the news. He had always been kind and warm towards me. He was always humble and generous with sharing his time and experiences. I cherish the time I got to spend with him and will never forget how he carried himself and the wisdom he imparted through his light-hearted humour.

Janhvi Kapoor to undertake intense preparation for Helen

The film would require Janhvi to project her fears and physical collapse in below-zero temperature. Janhvi will spend time in isolation and also experience first-hand the trauma of being placed in freezing temperature.

Boney Kapoor who produces the film says it’s a challenge for Janhvi to be doing a survivalist drama so early in your career. “If you look fake doing it, the audience will reject the film. Janhvi will have to work really hard to convince the audience of her character’s predicament,” says Boney.

The last Indian actor to look fully convincing in a survivalist drama was Janhvi’s Roohi co-star Rajkummar Rao in Trapped.

SCOOP: Sooryavanshi unlikely to release on April 30 due to new Covid-19 restrictions; trade experts share their views

Around 3 weeks ago, Bollywood Hungama was the first one to report that Sooryavanshi, the much awaited action film starring Akshay Kumar and directed by Rohit Shetty, is all set to finally release on April 30, 2021. The exhibitors were informed about this new release date and were told to get ready to screen the first big Bollywood film post the pandemic. A few days later, on March 14, also Rohit Shetty’s birthday, a formal announcement was made by the makers. As expected, it led to frenzy among the trade, exhibitors and fans at large. After all, this is one film that has been hugely awaited by almost everyone since almost a year.

SCOOP Sooryavanshi unlikely to release on April 30 due to new Covid-19 restrictions; trade experts share their views

Sadly, a lot has changed in the last two weeks with regard to the Covid-19 situation in India. On March 14, the day Sooryavanshi was officially announced for April 30 release, India recorded 26,513 cases. At present, the country sees around 60,000 plus cases daily. In other words, the jump has been extreme. Maharashtra is the biggest hotspot and it shockingly recorded nearly 40,000 cases on Sunday March 28. And there are no signs of the cases receding or even plateauing. It was hence no surprise that the Maharashtra government declared a night curfew in Maharashtra, from 8:00 pm to 7:00 am. For cinema business, this is shocking as it would mean that the last show of the day would be at 5:00 or 5:30 pm. This, along with 50% occupancy, would mean poor collections of films.

And the worst might be yet to come. There have been reports that the state government in Maharashtra is mulling over a lockdown from April 2 or 3. That would mean cinema halls would once again be shut.

Even before the night curfew was declared, the collections in the North and Western belt have been disappointing. The Hollywood biggie, Godzilla vs. Kong, which released on March 24, ended up collecting a huge Rs 28.96 crore in 5 days but a chunk of it came mainly from the South. It gave a clear idea that releasing a mid-sized Bollywood film in such a scenario would be suicidal. The postponement of Bunty Aur Babli 2, scheduled for April 23 release, and Chehre, scheduled to release on April 9, gave an indication that the release schedule is all set to go for a toss.

Sooryavanshi is obviously a bigger film than Bunty Aur Babli 2 and Chehre and the question everyone is asking is – will it release on April 30 as scheduled? We asked the trade to comment on this issue. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, “There has been no communication from the makers after their announcement on March 14 when they informed that they are bringing Sooryavanshi to cinemas on April 30. There’s a lot of speculation within and outside the film fraternity. The exhibitors are of course very sad but then they also understand that the cases are rising. There’s also a night curfew going on in Mumbai. So, the evening and night shows are ruled out completely. Under these circumstances, I am sure the producers must be rethinking but as of now, there’s no communication.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan also states, “Right now, it’s too early to comment. Almost a month is left. The situation is bad and one can only hope that things improve.”

SCOOP Sooryavanshi unlikely to release on April 30 due to new Covid-19 restrictions; trade experts share their views

The makers of Sooryavanshi had admitted that they were ready to bring the film even if cinemas in most centres are operating at 50% capacity. But the addition of another restriction in the form of night curfew can prove detrimental.

Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise in Jaipur, sighs, “50% occupancy and on top of that no shows in late evening and night. The collections would go for a toss in such a scenario.” Atul Mohan meanwhile quips, “Due to the night curfew in Maharashtra, the last show is held at 5:00 pm. Earlier, the government offices used to function from 9:00 to 5:00 pm. Now, even the cinema halls are forced to function in the same time frame!”

Raj Bansal is not much hopeful about the scenario improving. He rues, “I doubt Sooryavanshi is releasing on April 30. The spread of the virus is increasing. Secondly, no one knows when these night curfews will end. Due to these factors, no one will take a chance of releasing their film in a month’s time.”

He adds, “Also, we saw the fate of Roohi, Mumbai Saga, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar and Saina. The collections were very bad; I couldn’t imagine that the occupancy would be so poor.” He then emphasizes, “Rajasthan is also under night curfew. Many places in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are also under restrictions. We still hope that these curbs would not go on till the end of April but as a producer, I would not take a chance. If I was the producer, I would have definitely postponed the film. As an exhibitor, I would of course want Sooryavanshi to release as I need this big film for my theatre.”

Taran Adarsh makes it clear that one should wait for official communication. He says, “There are so many stakeholders in Sooryavanshi. They’ll have to come together and take a call. Postponing a film again and again of course leads to a lot of discussion on social media but the producers also need to think for the betterment of the film. They are the parents. A film is like a child for them. They need to protect it, nurture it and give it out at the right time. So whatever decision the makers take, I am going to respect that.” He signs off by saying, “I would suggest that let’s wait for the official communication and let’s not speculate. Producers ko bhi waqt dijiye. Let’s hope for the best and let’s keep our fingers crossed.”
